Bamboo Laser Engraving: Step-By-Step Guide

by Winnie Li Updated on December 06, 2024

For centuries, bamboo has been used in a wide range of products, from home decor and building materials to cookware and clothing. Why? Because it’s strong, sustainable, and beautiful.

Although bamboo is technically a grass, it has the sturdiness and strength of wood. Its unique grain texture and light color make it great for engraving. You can personalize bamboo cutting boards, coasters, pens, and a lot more – with desktop laser engravers.

Curious to try it out? This guide will walk you through the entire process of laser engraving bamboo. The goal is to provide insights on best practices for bold and prominent designs.

How Bamboo Laser Engraving Works?

Traditionally, engraving was a manual job, done with sharp tools. This method was labor-intensive and required artistic skill. However, laser engraving is a very precise alternative that delivers consistently high-quality results.

In laser engraving bamboo, an intense focused beam of light – known as a laser – penetrates the surface of the bamboo. This intense heat vaporizes the material in a controlled manner, creating a permanent, etched design.

Due to burning, the engraving is darker and stays prominent and permanent on light grains of the bamboo’s natural surface.

Both diode and CO2 are suitable for bamboo engraving, the former being a cost-effective option. However, for diodes consider higher power, probably above 35W for engraving and even higher, for cutting.

xTool S1: The Affordable Diode Laser Engraver for Bamboo

xtool s1

A diode laser engraver is an affordable option for engraving bamboo. xTool S1 is one of the most powerful diode laser engravers on the market. It has a 40W diode laser module that can process engraving at 600 mm/s.

The machine’s working area, 19.6" x 12.5", is 67% more than what’s available in other market engravers. If you want to work on long bamboo sheets, the workspace expands up to 118 inches with an automated pass-through slot.

With xTool S1, you can not only engrave flat surfaces but cylindrical and spherical ones’ too. It supports xTool’s signature rotary attachment, RA2 Pro. Engraving on curved and uneven surfaces–bamboo spoons, plates–is supported too.

For accurate design placements on your favorite bamboo products, S1 uses the innovative Pin-Point Positioning technology, where you mark some laser points on the material and software scans and sketches that lay out on the software. Just drag and drop the design, and start engraving!

xTool P2S: The Best CO2 Laser Engraver for Bamboo

xtool p2

xTool P2S is currently the best desktop CO2 laser engraver on the market for small business owners. It comes with a 55W CO2 laser module that can not only engrave but efficiently cut bamboo.

Its working area is slightly larger, 23.6" x 12", than S1. Similar to S1, its workspace too is expandable up to 118 inches with a passthrough slot. So, no worries when working on long bamboo sheets.

Internally, the machine has a dual 16MP camera setup that provides a real-time preview of the workspace and allows for accurate design placement. The setup also allows filling design and engraving on multiple items at once.

xTool P2S can engrave at a speed of 600 mm/s. Engraving is supported on all types of surfaces, whether flat, round (symmetrical), or curved (symmetrical). For cylindrical ones – mugs, cups – the RA2 attachment helps. But curved surfaces are dealt internally with an advanced 3D engraving algorithm that dynamically adjusts focus.

Since in wood or bamboo engraving, there’s a risk of burns, an air assist is needed. P2S is one of the few machines in which air assist comes built-in, instead of being an add-on accessory.

How to Laser Engrave Bamboo?

So, to explain the engraving we have taken an example of a bamboo cutting board. The process is more or less for all other bamboo items. The detailed tutorial and design of this project are available on Design Find.

Step 1: Design the Artwork

One option is to create the artwork through graphic design software like CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator. But that would require some design skills.

The best option currently is AI Make, an AI image generation software by xTool that prepares laser cut, engraving-ready images in just a few words of prompt.

Step 2: Prepare the Bamboo

Clean the bamboo surface with a cloth – a damp one is better as it removes dirt as well as makes the bamboo slightly wet, which results in darker engraving.

Step 3: . Set Up the Laser Engraver

Place the bamboo inside the laser engraver. Use S1’s pin-point positioning to mark the border points of the cutting board. Import and fit the image in the portion you want to engrave.

Use the framing feature to outline the area where the design will be engraved. Adjust as needed.

Step 4: Customize Engraving Settings

For bamboo, we recommend setting power at 30, Speed at 150, and LPI at 100. If you need deeper engraving for pouring resin afterward, then set the power to 60, speed 200, and LPI 100.

Step 5: Post Engraving Cleanup and Resin Inlay (Optional)

For a darker, more vivid finish, apply food-safe mineral oil or wood conditioner over the engraved area.

For decorative projects, you can fill engraved areas with colored resin (e.g., blue for waterways). Allow the resin to dry for 24 hours. And then sand it.
